MICHELIN names 19 new hotels to its 2026 Japan Keys list, taking the total to 145
MICHELIN's own annual ranking of Japan's best hotels grew to 145 Key holders, with Gora Kadan Fuji and Capella Kyoto stepping up to two Keys and 17 hotels — Park Hyatt Tokyo among them — newly named at one Key, the full national list neither Mitsui Fudosan's nor Four Seasons Otemachi's own releases on the same announcement covers.
The MICHELIN Guide named 19 hotels newly to its Keys list for Japan in its 2026 selection, taking the national total to 145 properties, the guide's Japan operator, Nihon Michelin Tire Co., said in a release dated 18 September.
The selection keeps its three-tier structure. Seven hotels hold the top tier of three Keys nationwide, unchanged from last year, according to the release — a group that includes Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi, which floortok has already reported kept its three Keys for a third straight year. Twenty-three hotels now hold two Keys, after Gora Kadan Fuji in Shizuoka and Capella Kyoto were newly elevated to that tier and Kyoto's Yoan Nishitomiya was promoted up from one Key, the guide said. The one-Key tier grew to 115 hotels, with 17 new entrants including Park Hyatt Tokyo, Imperial Hotel Kyoto, Waldorf Astoria Osaka, JW Marriott Tokyo, and Hoshinoya properties in Okinawa and on Taketomi Island.
Beyond the 145 Key holders, the guide said it separately listed 253 additional hotels selected for the guide this year without receiving a Key. MICHELIN's inspectors assess properties against five published standards, and the company said this year's selection reflected trends toward slower travel, wellness offerings that extend beyond the spa, and a greater emphasis on privacy within luxury stays.
This is the guide's own annual index of where Japan's best hotels stand, and it is worth reading at the national level rather than one property at a time. Two of Japan's most active hotel developers, Mitsui Fudosan and Four Seasons Otemachi, have already put out their own releases confirming they held onto their Keys off this same announcement, but neither covers the wider picture of who moved up. Seventeen new one-Key entrants in a single year — Park Hyatt Tokyo among them — says the tier most Japan travel-retail and hospitality readers actually compete in is still filling in fast, even as the very top of the market, the three-Key group, held flat at seven.
