Tokyo Banana, Haneda's best-selling brand, opens its first café

Tokyo Banana is graduating from souvenir counter to café at Haneda, after Japan Airport Terminal's own sales data crowned it the best-selling brand across its directly-run Terminal 1 and 2 shops.

Tokyo Banana, the Tokyo souvenir confectionery that has sold at Haneda since 1992, will open its first-ever café format there on September 17, according to Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. (JAT), the operator of Haneda's passenger terminals. The TOKYO BANANA Cafe Stand opens in the departure gate lounge on Terminal 1's second floor, in front of gate 16 — inside the security-cleared area, reachable only by ticketed, checked-in passengers.

The new format sells the brand's confectionery in a form it has never offered before: a made-to-order "Tokyo Banana Bar," finished after ordering in three flavours (special ¥550, berry ¥500, lemon-pistachio ¥500), alongside a Haneda-exclusive soft serve in a banana-milk flavour (¥500), served in a cup or cone. Retail opens at 6am; the café side runs from 7am to 7pm.

The opening follows a striking disclosure buried in JAT's own release: across the 23 shops JAT runs directly in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, Tokyo Banana was the No. 1 brand by sales value for the year to March 2026 — ahead, by JAT's own count, of every other brand on the airport's shop floor.

A gift brand moving from shelf to counter is a Product and Presentation bet as much as a menu addition: it turns a buy-now, eat-later souvenir into eat-now, buy-again spending inside a security zone where a captive passenger has nowhere else to go and little reason to shop around. That is the travel-retail logic in miniature — merchandising for the traveller's actual moment, not just their suitcase — and it lines up with JAT's own numbers. Merchandise sales, the company's largest business line, grew 4.2% to ¥155.6bn in the year to March 2026, then rose a further 6.5% to ¥39.4bn in the first quarter of the new fiscal year — a quarter in which JAT said Haneda's own duty-free sales set a fresh quarterly record. For a brand that sold at the airport for 34 years without ever running a food-service counter, being crowned Haneda's best-selling brand appears to have earned it a bigger footprint.

Whether a made-to-order bar and a soft-serve machine can turn out sales at the rate a No. 1 souvenir brand implies — or simply pull demand from the confectionery counter a few metres away — is the first thing to watch.
