Tokyu Department Store opens a second dedicated wine shop, in Futako-Tamagawa

Tokyu Department Store is giving wine its own standalone shop for the second time, carrying the format from a Shibuya side street into a suburban food hall — a test of whether the concept travels beyond its original clientele.

Tokyu Department Store will open a second location of its wine specialty shop, THE WINE by TOKYU DEPARTMENT STORE, on August 6 inside the Tokyu Food Show basement at Futako-Tamagawa Rise Shopping Center, the company said in a release — following the original store on a side street in Shibuya's Shoto district.

The Futako-Tamagawa shop will carry about 1,300 wines, centred on Burgundy alongside other regional, Japanese and natural wines, and will run from 10am to 8pm. Tokyu said opening promotions will include limited Champagne and rare Burgundy sets and exclusive offerings from Japanese domaines, complimentary Champagne for customers on opening day, winemaker visit events on August 8 and 15, and a September dinner event tied to the chief executive of the Italian estate IL BORRO.

Carving wine out into its own shop, rather than folding it into a food-hall counter, is a Presentation bet as much as a merchandising one: it lets Tokyu curate depth and run a calendar of tastings and winemaker visits that a shared floor could not support. Placing the second store in a suburban food hall, rather than another central Tokyo address, is the more telling choice — it tests whether a format built around an affluent, wine-literate Shibuya clientele travels to a different kind of catchment, a read that matters more to the tenant-mix playbook than the bottle count.
